A New, Better Approach to Learning

So you may be thinking, this sounds great and all, but there is no way this can be as effective as learning in a classroom setting, right?

Wrong.

In fact, research is proving that in many cases, E‐learning (distance learning), can be more effective than traditional classroom instruction, under the right circumstances. The U.S. Department of Education’s study, the Evaluation of Evidence‐Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta‐Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies, reported in May 2009 that:

  • Students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than taking the same course through traditional face‐to‐face instruction.
  • Instruction combining online and face‐to‐face elements had a larger advantage relative to purely face‐to‐face instruction than did purely online instruction.
  • Studies in which learners in the online condition spent more time on task than students in the face‐to‐face condition, and found a greater benefit for online learning.

The myChinese360 program incorporates the best elements of online learning in a multidimensional format. The online classroom is as close to having a traditional classroom experience as a student can have, only better in many ways. Unlike a traditional classroom, which might have anywhere from 20‐30 students, the myChinese360 online class can have as few as 5 and never more than 15 students in a class.

Getting after‐school help from a traditional classroom teacher can be quite difficult due to time constraints and the student-teacher ratios. On the contrary, myChinese360 provides 24/7 access to online tutors, so help is always available when a student needs it.

The first phase of education as we know it has been based on in‐school instruction for as long as we can remember. It has generally been confined between a certain set of hours and supplemented by homework after school. The next phases coincided with the advent of online learning. This type of learning was initially geared towards post‐secondary education and allowed for access to instruction anytime and anywhere. The instruction offered by traditional online learning has generally been asynchronous, which means that instruction might be taped and replayed at a later time convenient for the student. The next phase of online, (distance learning) is not as yet prevalent, but is quite a bit more powerful. It involves the use of synchronous instruction, which provides direct, one‐to‐one instruction that is live, real‐time interaction between teachers and students. This is the level of instruction that is provided by the myChinese360 program.

The advent of new technologies, especially in the area of distance learning, will force all of us, as educators, to start to view the future possibilities for educating our youth in a much different light. New technologies and methods are impacting the way instruction is now delivered. In fact, it is no longer just the curriculum that needs to analyze for more effective instruction, but the delivery method by which the curriculum is dispensed to our students. Just as the Internet has dramatically impacted the way we make purchase, by not forcing us to a traditional bricks and mortar structure, but allowing us to buy online, anytime/anywhere, we can now offer students anytime access to learning beyond the school building.
