Not memorizing, but learning

In the U.S. parents, teachers, administrators, business professionals and politicians are all trying to find answers on how to better education. Many children are dropping out of school at early ages, in fact only 70% of high school students graduate. This seems like an unwarranted amount considering the U.S. is a developed country with leading technology and opportunities.

The problem is that students aren’t very motivated anymore. They don’t have a reason to memorize their education. Isn’t that what students are really doing in school now, just memorizing? They take multiple choice tests, or answer questions that are fill in the blank with a word bank. We aren’t testing our students on how well they know a subject, we are testing them on how well they can memorize that subject.

So on top of not being motivated to learn, our students aren’t actually “learning”. The definition of learning is: “The ability to construct knowledge in meaningful ways for a particular purpose or solution to a well-defined problem.” The word that stuck out to me in that definition was construct. That is an action verb. It suggests doing something. How often do children act their education? The next part that stuck out was for a particular purpose or solution to a problem. So learning is an action for a purpose. I know that when I was going through grade school I didn’t think of myself going for any other purpose other than my mother making me.

Now that we understand that learning is something to be involved in, why are we teaching in classrooms? That seems like the worst environment to learn in, doesn’t it? You sit and listen. You aren’t ACTING. What if instead of teaching students about the Revolutionary war, they acted it out. They would certainly have much more fun with it, and they would have to prepare for their parts.

The point is that we are missing a huge aspect of learning that is truly the fundamental law of knowledge, and that is doing what we are being taught. Everyone knows the saying, ‘It’s like riding a bike, you never forget.’ Ok, but what if you were told how to ride a bike, but you never actually rode it. Would you still remember? Probably not!

We obviously can’t do away with classrooms, but we can add to them. Let’s add programs that put children in the situations where they have to apply the knowledge they are learning. Just for fun let’s have them all learning Chinese! These students will go onto their program through a computer and learn Chinese from teachers, and they also have to speak it. They have to talk to their classmates in the language, and they have to write the language to them as well. This would truly be learning! If they could also be put into a world that mimics China that would be even better, because they would be experiencing their curriculum. But these students wouldn’t be sitting and listening to someone teaching Chinese. They wouldn’t have the expectation of being able to speak Chinese just from a classroom lesson. They would learn Chinese! Luckily this progam does exist! Their are educators who are working to solve this gap in education. I think a key element we are all missing in education is the fun experience children could have. The goal of education shouldn’t be test scores that are put into statistical data and measured against students in other states. Those students are the teacher’s and administrator’s numbers of success. Students are not numbers! They are minds that are eventually going to take over our country and lead us into our future. Let’s treat these kids like they mean that to us! Put test scores aside for a moment and try to teach kids based on the definition of learning. They will actually learn, and you will see those scores go up as a result (even though test scores shouldn’t be our end goal).

Try doing in a classroom, you will be rewarded far beyond test scores!
