The traditional foreign language offerings, Spanish and French, are still leading the numbers among high schoolers enrolled in each courses. However, some Eastern languages are slowly grabbing their bigger piece of the pie.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages reported that Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Arabic are being offered more and more in high schools around the country, in urban, suburban and rural areas alike. The increases in Chinese, Japanese and Arabic offerings were particularly strong in the states of California, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.

The demand for these languages is clearly on the rise? The difficulty exists in finding qualified language teachers and implementing new curriculum in these schools. With budget cuts all around, how can schools alter their language programs to fit the changing foreign language needs?
